About a year ago I decided to create a community web site that would provide photographers with a place to share information on the photo locations they have found.
I was motivated to do this because I travel a lot as part of my job and although I only get a bit of time between meetings I do like to try and get a few good shots out of every trip. My problem was that getting good shoot location tips about an area like a city center is not easy at all.
I explored the many content creation tools out there (the free ones anyway) and decided that none fit my needs. I therefore decided to create one from scratch. Four months of programming over a nine month period led to the launch of gonshoot.com and I started to build a database of location articles.
On starting work at Emergent I immediately ran out of time to evolve the software and after some time I started to once again explore off the shelf options. Drupal is something I had looked at in the beginning but had discounted because the documentation made it imposable to understand. This time round I had Pro Drupal Development, a well-written book that far surpasses the quality of the online documentation.
In one weekend I created a new gonshoot.com with almost all the functionality of the original.. I did not know if I should laugh or cry!
