When we moved from our 3 bedroom house in the UK to our small apartment in LA we boxed up much of our library and other things we did not need day-to-day and they have traveled with us from apartment to apartment for 5 years, mostly living in the “guest room”
Well with the immanent birth of our first I have spent much of the last few weeks unpacking all the boxes, sorting, being brutal, giving much to good will and re-boxing what we cant part with.
During this process I ran across an old gem in my book collection. The perfect travel books!
Whenever I was traveling for work I would take a book from the Oxford press series “A Very Short Introduction”. it is a set of books 190 in all that cover every topic you can imagine. Each book is a well written essay on a specific topic (Politics, Gandhi, Cryptography, Logic, Game Theory, Modern China etc.), each book is about 130 pages but as the book is half normal size they take about an evening (or a flight) to read.
They are small, light, interesting, fit into a coat pocket easily so you can take them with you everywhere and because of their size they are easy to read in even the most cramped airline seat.
I have about 30, Gandhi, Buddhism, Islam and Quantum Theory are my favorites from memory. I will have to re-read the 30 I have and then start on the 160 they have added to the set!
Highly recommended… happy reading.
