Using Gist to feel better

I try to keep my social networks small. LinkedIn is limited to people I have physically met for business. Facebook is limited to family and friends I have met in the real world and twitter.. actually I am still trying to work out how I want to use twitter, news source? Chat room? Friends? Work?

Anyway, as with all social networks there are some people who are more important to me than others and it is this fact above all else that is moving me to Gist.

In Gist I can rank my contacts. With about 700 people in my networks (I meet people for a living) plus about 100 company blogs/twitter accounts I track reading their combines social media output is like drinking from a fire hose, chronologically tackling the stack is just not efficient.

With Gist I can sort the stack by importance to me. I am finding that this lets me feel a lot better about not clearing my social media inbox every day.. I know I have at least seen the important stuff.

Seth Godin is a good example. I don’t know Seth but I find his blog interesting/amusing. Seth is not critical to my day so he ranks low, if I get to his post(s) of the day great, if not, that’s ok to.

I am not ready to fully embrace Gist, there are bugs and some missing functionality that will need addressing before I commit to it and stop using google reader but it is evolving very nicely.

There is something about Gist that I like. But to be honest I have not figured out what it is. It had never occurred to me to think of it like Google Reader.

I have over 1000 business contacts and made the fatal mistake of putting all of them on Gist when I setup the account. Now Gist is too big to be useful. I am going to rethink how to use it.

    Thanks for the tip!

Mike, I did the same thing.. There is a reset button at the bottom of your gist settings page that lets you reset all user data. I did that and then imported only the people I want to follow.

I am finding Gist a much more usable RSS reader than goggle reader because the feeds are now sorted by importance to me not chronologically.

The iPod Gist app is also better than Google reader on the iPhone.

I have been fortunate to meet and work with many great teachers from many cultures and walks of life.

They have shared their stories generously and showed me that there is always more to learn if you are open to having your world view challenged.

This blog is my ways of paying it forward.
