Your leadership review is in your inbox
Could you measure your team leadership skills with email analytics?
At boarding school I played Rugby (loosehead prop). Different members of the pack have set positions in the scrum depending on their abilities. The pack works as a unit to achieve a shared goal and those with their heads down need to trust those around them to succeed.
Creating team cohesion is a primary leadership task.
If everyone knows the others strengths and weaknesses; understands how each member complements the whole and trusts that all share the same goal then communication can be succinct.
If the members of a team are composing long emails that go to great lengths to clarify positions, placate apposing agendas and prop up egos then the team leader is failing.
So take a look at your inbox, are your teams’ communications short and succinct or are they closer to the waffling we expect from politicians?
Perhaps that’s an indicator of your success as team leader.
Harebrained? Genius? What do you think?
